FEDERAL FUNDS AVAILABLE AT WVSU AND KVCTC

Federal Pell Grant
Pell Grants are available to undergraduate students based on financial need as determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Amounts for 2009-2010 range from a maximum of $5,350 per year to $976 per year. How much you get depends on your Expected Family Contribution from the FAFSA application and whether you enroll full time or part time and whether you attend a full academic year (typically fall and spring semester).

NOTE: All electronic awards at WVSU/KVCTC show the full time Pell amount. If you enroll 9-11 hours, your Pell will be 75% of the full time amount. If you enroll 6-8 hours your Pell will be 50% of the full time amount.

Eligibility Limit of Pell Grants

  • Students who receive their first Pell Grant on or after July 1, 2008 may continue to receive the Pell Grant for 18 semesters or until the first baccaluareate degree is received.

  • Effective July 1, 2009 students enrolled in a certificate, associate, or baccalaureate program may receive up to two Pell Grants in one award year to accelerate their program. To receive two Pell Grants a student must:

    • Complete the equivalent of a full academic year*  within the first award year; and

    • Enroll at least half-time each semester

*Under current law, students must typically complete a minimum of 24 credits over 30 weeks of instructional time (normally fall and spring semester) to meet the definition of completing a full academic year for Federal Financial Aid Programs.

ACG and SMART Grant

The ACG or SMART grant will be available to eligible students after January 2007.

An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full and part-time students who are U.S citizens or eligible non-citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who have successfully completed a rigorous high school program as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award and the student must have financial need for the grant.

A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full amd part-time students who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security: list of eligible majors. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award and is not avalaible for KVCTC students.

 

Federal Work Study
Available to those who demonstrate financial need. You must come to the Office of Student Financial Assistance to request work study. If granted, you must report to Wallace Hall, Room 216 to complete employment paperwork and get a work assignment. Federal Work Study provides a job to you to assist in paying your educational expenses.

Federal Perkins Loan
Low interest loan (5%) to be repaid beginning nine months after graduation or leaving school. These funds are given to students who demonstrate extreme financial need as determined by the U.S. Department of Education.  This loan is only available to WVSU students.

S.E.O.G.
The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is given to undergraduate students who demonstrate extreme financial need as determined by the U.S. Department of Education.

Loans
There are three types of low interest Federal Loans available:

  • Subsidized Student Loan- fixed rate (see chart below) *
  • Unsubsidized Student Loan- fixed rate 6.8%*
  • Parent PLUS Loan- fixed rate 8.5%* (parents may borrow up to the cost of attendance for a dependent student).
  • The current default rate on student loans at WVSU is 13.1%.

Students must be enrolled at least half time (six semester hours) in order to receive student loan funds. All loans are subject to an origination fee up to 2%. You will receive a loan disclosure statement showing the net amount of your loan disbursement.

All loans disbursed prior to July 1, 2006 carry a variable interest rate which is capped at 8.25% for student loans and 9% for Parent loans.

 

Other Aid Programs

STATE FUNDS

West Virginia Higher Education Grant

Available to full time undergraduate West Virginia residents who demonstrate financial need. You must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 1, enroll as a full time student, complete 24 semester hours per year and have a GPA of at least 2.0. The grant pays a scaled award based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The maximum grant is $3000 per year but, may not exceed mandatory tuition and fees charged to all students. The EFC cap on the grant is $6000. Promise Scholarship

Available to qualifying students who maintain a high school G.P.A. of 3.0 and an ACT score of 22 with a minimum 20 on the subtests or a combined score of 1020 on the SAT with at least a score of 490 in critical reading and 480 in math.

Promise students must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA and complete thirty (30) semester hours each academic year while in college. Students must enroll full time in order to receive Promise. It is suggested that full time Promise students take fifteen (15) hours per semester. Students may use the summer term to complete the requirements of the Promise Scholarship but, Promise does not pay for summer enrollment. Classes taken before receipt of the scholarship do not count towards Promise requirements.

First year Promise students may make a 2.75 GPA during the first year but, be aware that the cumulative GPA must be at least 3.00 by the end of the second year.

Appeals cannot be granted for failure to maintain the basic requirements of the scholarship. In some limited cases deferments may be granted by the school for medical reasons. In some limited cases the director of the Promise Scholarship Program may grant deferments. Once the scholarship is lost it cannot be reinstated. Students pursuing a four year degree may receive Promise for eight semesters. Students pursuing two year degrees may receive Promise for four semesters. HEAPS Grant
Available to part-time,  WV resident undergraduates who have financial need with a G.P.A. of at least 2.00. Qualifying students who indicate part time enrollment on the "Comments" section of the Award on MyState will be offered this fund or the fund will be added to your award after drop/add ends. . ROTC Scholarships
Two and Three Year Scholarships
For qualified Sophomores, Juniors and Graduate students interested in pursuing a career as an officer in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard. Pays tuition, books and fees. AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a national initiative that involves people of all ages and backgrounds in strengthening America's communities through service. In exchange for service, members receive education awards. AmeriCorps members must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and at least 17 years of age. Additional information and applications may be obtained by calling 1-800-94-ACORPS (1-800-942-2677). If you receive an Americorps award you will need to notify both the Financial Aid Office and the Cashier's Office.

You must report the source and amount of all other aid resources you are receiving to the Office Of Student Financial Assistance.


Federal Financial Aid (SEOG, WV Higher Education Grant, College Work Study, Perkins Loan, Stafford Student Loans, and Parent Loan) is supplemental to all other aid resources.
Other aid resources include such funds as: Scholarships, Waivers, Americorps, WIA, Job Corps, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
