Dear Parents,
Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. We look forward to assisting your child in this endeavor. We offer a few tips here to assist parents in assisting their children.
All financial aid is awarded for one year at a time. The student must reapply for aid each year for the upcoming academic year. A student reapplies for aid by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The use of a federal PIN number for both students and parents is required to complete the on-line FAFSA. Parents may use the same PIN number for multiple children. The recommended completion date for the FAFSA is March 1st. Tax information is needed to complete the FAFSA. You do not have to file your taxes by March 1st, in order to complete the FAFSA. You may estimate income information but, should correct the information once your taxes are filed for the year.
All notices of deadlines are posted on our web page and required documents notices are sent via e-mail. We use the e-mail provided by WVSU/WVSCTC for continuing students or the email provided on the FAFSA for new students not yet admitted to WVSU/WVSCTC. No notices will be mailed. Spam filters should allow e-mail from WVSU/WVSCTC.
We feel strongly that students are legal adults and must take responsibility for managing their financial aid. We do understand that students will need some parental assistance in the application process due to the nature of the financial information that is required on the federal financial aid forms.
Student consent is required to release personally identifiable information to parents such as award amounts and disbursement amounts unless the student is claimed as a dependent on the parent’s taxes. Since tax filing information is not always available to our office we require the FERPA Consent Form be on file before we can release information pertaining to a student.
